Microsoft ha anunciado que ya está disponible en descarga gratuita el sistema de virtualización por software, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008. Con el lanzamiento de este Software, Microsoft pretende dar un nuevo golpe a VMWare, uno de los sistemas de virtualización mas usados por los usuarios.

Al instalar Microsoft Hiper-V Server 2008, su entorno es similar al de una instalación “Server Core” de Windows Server 2008, pero solo con las funciones necesarias para montar entornos virtualizados que pueden gestionarse de forma local o remota.

Requisitos para la instalación :

• Sistemas operativos compatibles: Windows Server 2008.

• Hyper-V Server 2008 es una versión de 64 bits, y requiere un hardware Intel VT o AMD-V de 64bits.

• Procesador: Intel Pentium 4, Xeon, procesador Core 2 Duo, AMD Opteron, Athlon 64, Athlon X2. La ejecución de hardware de Protección de Datos(DEP), debe estar disponible y ser habilitada. En concreto, debe permitir Intel XD bit (Bit de desactivación de ejecución) o AMD NX bit (no ejecutar bits).

• Como mímino se debe disponer de una CPU de: 1 GHz, aunque se recomienda 2 GHz o superior.

• RAM: Mínima: 1 GB de RAM, aunque se recomienda 2 GB de RAM o superior; máxima de 32 GB.

• Espacio disponible en disco: 2 GB de espacio disponible en disco duro, mas el espacio adicional en el disco que sea necesario para cada sistema operativo invitado.

• Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 is a stand-alone product that will be available via the Microsoft Download Center free of charge.
• Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 does not require CALs for the product itself.
• CALs will be required for all Windows Server virtualized operating systems which are hosted on Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008.
• Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 will be available in the following languages:

Customers who require richer and more robust virtualization features, such as Quick Migration, multi-site clustering, large memory support (greater than 32 GB of RAM), and more than four processers on the host server, should use Windows Server 2008.
